3CAD includes three complementary ways to measure your design. Use them to check clearances while working, validate object sizes, and produce clean, dimensioned views for review.
This page gives a short overview and points you to the detailed guides for each tool.
Measuring tools overview
| Tool | Best for | Where you can use it | What you get | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Layer-based design measurements | Full, structured measurements for design and review | 2D and Elevation | Measurement sets grouped into layers | Show/hide by layer to control clutter; supports comprehensive measurement visibility. |
| Measure distance tool | Quick distance checks between two points | 2D planner | A distance measurement you place manually | Can be temporary (quick check) or persistent (kept on the plan). |
| Dimension lines for the selected object | Inspecting the size/clearances of one object | 2D, 3D and Elevation | Dimension lines around the selected object always visible | Updates dynamically while you edit/move the object. |
Which tool should I use?
Layer-based design measurements
Use layer-based measurements when you want a broader, more complete measurement view across the plan or a wall elevation—especially for validation or client review.
Where you can use it
2D floor plan
Elevation view
What it does
Shows measurements grouped into layers (for example walls, openings, furniture, installations/MEP where available).
Lets you switch measurement layers on/off to focus on what you need and keep the drawing readable.
Measure distance tool (manual)
Use this tool when you want to measure the distance between two points in the 2D planner, without changing the project.
Where you can use it
2D planner only
What it does
Measures between two points you choose (for example, wall-to-wall, object-to-wall, or object-to-object).
-
Supports two ways of working:
Temporary measurement for quick checks.
Persistent measurement that stays visible on the plan for reference.
Dimension lines for the selected object
Use this feature when you need precise size and positioning information for the specific item you are working on.
Where you can use it (while the object is selected)
2D view
3D view
Elevation view
What it does
Displays dimension lines for the selected object (such as key reference distances).
Updates live as you move or modify the item, helping you validate placement and clearances while editing.
Glossary of terms
2D planner
Top-down floor plan used to place and arrange elements.
3D view
Perspective view used to visualize the room and objects in 3D.
Elevation view
A wall-focused view showing elements in height and width.
Dimension lines
Graphic lines and labels that show sizes and distances.
Measurement layer
A category of measurements that can be shown or hidden as a group.
